Overview
Research Computing advances scientific discovery by providing computational tools and expertise to accelerate and demonstrate research outcomes. We support computationally enabled science by providing computational building blocks (e.g., HPC, Machine Learning environments, Data Management Tools etc.). In addition, we provide services, expertise, and support to researchers to optimize their use of our capabilities (e.g., User Experience, Software Engineering, HPC Consulting, Cloud Deployment, etc.). Lastly fostering a culture of computing through interdisciplinary collaboration, community building, and access to computational resources.
We are seeking experienced Software Engineers with a passion for DevOps culture and infrastructure, automating all the things, who bring a user first mindset. The candidates will provide leadership in executing the DevOps lifecycle including developing, testing, deploying, and monitoring of scalable cloud native applications, infrastructure, and workflows using Infrastructure as Code tool chains. These are in support of a large Labwide initiative to provide novel tools, platforms, and infrastructure to revolutionize how software is engineered in support of our diverse research mission. The candidates will work alongside other senior engineers, and research scientists to design, implement, and support robust solutions for our peers across the institution. In addition, they will help build up teams of early career Software and IT Engineers, modeling behaviors to institutionalize solid DevOps culture and principles. Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, and Extract Transform and Load (ETL) data pipelines skills are also advantageous for these positions.
What we offer:
• A unique opportunity to continue to exercise and hone your software engineering and operations skills and contribute across nationally and internationally significant domains.
• You will have the prospect to delight scientists, and engineers across PNNL with innovative cloud native solutions to challenging problems.
• An environment where you will be able to impact numerous projects across a variety of domains and areas of scientific discovery.
• The autonomy to build your own opportunities within the Lab for yourself and for other software engineers.
Responsibilities
• Experienced Software or DevOps Engineer who is excited to design, develop, and operate automated workflows and infrastructure which has a direct impact on small to large research projects that span a wide array of scientific domains.
• You must have experience with CI/CD tooling (e.g. GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, AWS CodeBuild), Infrastructure as code (e.g. Helm, Terraform, Ansible, Score), Containerization (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Apptainer), and Git Version control .
• Experience in multiple cloud environments (e.g. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure. With experience in infrastructure provisioning (CDK/Bicep/other), and Serverless architectures (AWS Lambda/Azure Functions)
• You love supporting, helping, and coaching those around you and thrive whilst exploring abstract infrastructure concepts
• You have a history of DevOps culture evangelism and execution.
• You relish working on broad and diverse scopes of work across a broad range of scientific domains.
• You have demonstrated the ability to thrive in ambiguity and think abstractly. If it isn't defined you can design it, overcoming constraints to provide solutions.
