ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Division of Comparative Medicine directs thirteen integrated laboratories for research and teaching involving animals providing researchers from all departments and disciplines throughout the University and its affiliated institutions with technical assistance and support services in surgical procedural, diagnostic, behavioral testing, and transgenic laboratories.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position will independently perform a variety of laboratory animal research procedures, including data collection and analysis, as well as perform and/or direct others in complex veterinary medical, surgical, and research experimental techniques. Perform and/or direct others in the specialized care, husbandry, and use of immunocompromised and mutagenized rodents.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contributes to the routine husbandry and care of all research and teaching animal collections, animal conditioning and quarantine, the containment of infectious collections, and the isolation of immunocomprimised collections;

Maintains equipment certification and arranges for equipment maintenance when necessary. Engineers devices to accommodate equipment for a variety of species for different needs. Contributes to the design of experiments; establishes and performs complex experimental techniques including radioimmunoassays, CBCs and differential counts, serum chemistries, microbiological cultures, DNA Polymerase Chain Reaction, while pursuing answers to complex biomedical research questions and while evaluating samples from animal colonies for clinical medical diagnostic purposes; makes modifications in planned schedules and methods based on observations and results

Provides assistance to the investigators regarding animal identification, handling, restraint, care, and anesthesia; assists with maintaining adequate inventories of veterinary medical and surgical supplies, equipment, and reagents, animal husbandry supplies.

Collects clinical data, and prepares reports regarding observations made. Makes recommendations regarding the design of diagnostic protocols; maintains logs and records of observations, findings, and results for use in presentations, publications, in clinical veterinary medical determinations, in management decisions, and for compliance purposes; makes recommendations regarding findings and observations. Conducts literature review of research, veterinary medical, and management topics.

Independently performs, and assists with veterinary medical and surgical techniques (i.e. antisera production, radiography, general anesthesia, and surgical support); serves as an anesthetist, surgical assistant, and research technical assistant; administers preanesthetic, injectible and inhalant anesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics, and experimental biologics and radio nucleotides to animals; prepares procedural, surgical, and testing laboratories and complex equipment and supplies for experimentation. Assists with tissue and specimen collection and processing.

Recommends policies for program operations; advises the Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Director regarding implementation and revision of policies and procedures and assists with maintenance with compliance applications and records regarding the use of animals within the division.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural, physical or medical science. Progressively responsible experience involving scientific laboratory or field work may be substituted for the required college education on a year for year basis.

FLSB1310 Equivalency:

4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.

PREFERRED:

3-5 years of animal handling & veterinary experience, at least two of which are in a research environment demonstrating progressively more complex responsibilities and competencies. AALAS certification required; AALAS certification at the LATG level preferred.
