TSA: MUSIC TEACHER
PRIMARY FUNCTION
A TSA, who instructs elementary students in vocal music and basic music theory and knowledge as outlined in the California Visual and Performing Arts Standards.
RESPONSIBLE TO
Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services or designee
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Instruct students in vocal music of various styles and historical backgrounds
• Teach basic music theory and knowledge as outlined in the California Visual and Performing Arts Standards
• Plan, rehearse and direct special programs at each school to which assigned; plan, rehearse and coordinate instruction and District-wide performances with other District music teachers
• Maintain equipment used by students
• Schedule school site classes, collaborating with site administration
• Evaluate and select music for program of instruction aligned to California Visual and Performing Arts Standards
• Evaluate performance and notify classroom teachers of grades to be entered on individual records and report cards
• Maintain proper control and a suitable learning environment in assigned classes; cooperates with the school administration and staff in providing such control and environment in buildings and on the grounds
• Provide activities through which students may develop attitudes, work habits and personal qualifications essential to effective learning
QUALIFICATIONS
• Thorough knowledge of and ability to teach music techniques and proper care of equipment; ability to perform on at least one standard orchestral instrument or voice; ability to conduct, detect and correct errors, convey correct musical interpretation to musical performing groups, and ability to read and teach written music
• Ability to modify instruction to meet student needs
• Understanding of the physical, intellectual, social and emotional growth patterns of students
• Capacity to work effectively with students, parents, District personnel, and community representatives in providing a suitable educational program
• Ability to properly use and care for the materials, supplies, and equipment employed in teaching music
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• The appropriate California Single Subject teaching credential, CLAD and/or BCLAD equivalent
• Emphasis or minor in music preferred
• A minimum of three years of classroom experience
• Bilingual/Bicultural preferred
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to see for the purpose of reading correspondence, documents and other printed matter.
• Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels in person and/or on the telephone.
• Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and discussions.
• Dexterity, sufficient to write, use telephone.
• Work involves considerable use of computer terminal with video display and long periods of intense concentration.
• Performs occasional lifting.
