The Director of Finance is responsible for executing the financial management strategy and contributing to the development of the organization’s strategic goals. In addition to
the strategic components, the Director of Finance is the hands on leader of the finance team and is charged with development and execution of the financial policies, financial reporting, and procedures for the organization in a startup environment. As a member of the management team, this leader models both passion for and commitment to the execution of the organization’s mission and strategy.
Accountabilities
• Advise Executive Director and management team on all financial and business matters.
Contribute to the development of strategic and tactical organizational goals and objectives.
• Under the direction of the Executive Director, ensure the financial vitality of the organization by
leading the financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, and
policy matters that are aligned with the exempt purpose and mission of the organization.
• Serve as management liaison to the board by effectively presenting and communicating
financial matters at select meetings and as requested by the Executive Director.
• Proactively manage the risk management programs of the organization including insurance
and regulatory compliance.
• Develop a high functioning Finance department that executes effective business, accounting,
and bookkeeping operations and team collaboration across the organization.
• Be a financial mentor within the finance team and across the organization, increasing the
financial and business acumen of the leaders and staff of the organization.
• Manage the development and maintenance of accounting and financial records in accordance
with generally accepted accounting procedures.
• Develop streamlined financial systems including internal operating procedures.
• Establish financial and accounting standards, policies, and procedures to provide exceptional
financial oversight in compliance with federal and state regulations.
• Lead the preparation and delivery of financial reports, schedules, and forecasts to provide
management with timely, accurate business information.
• Manage relationships with external financial and compliance partners such as banks, auditors,
leasing agents, and others.
• Negotiate contracts and oversee relationships with major vendors that support the
organization’s operation, and partner with management team and department managers to
negotiate departmental contracts as needed.
• Spearhead the development and execution of the annual and capital budget process.
• Ensure legal and audit compliance with tax-exempt organization laws and regulations.
Essential Skills and Experience
• Business or accounting degree required. CPA and a master’s in business administration
preferred.
• Minimum of 5 year’s progressive management experience leading accounting functions in a
organizational environment, with experience in hospitality and knowledge of tax-exempt
organizations.
• Record of success facilitating organizational change and development within a growing
organization.
• Excellent judgment and problem solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
• Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.
• Self-reliant, problem solver, results-oriented innovator.
• Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and
productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and administration initiatives.
