Job Duties
Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents seeks a fresh graduate or experienced full-time, Music Therapist.
Purpose of this position is to provide Music Therapists to individuals and group expressive therapy activities to ensure that patients are provided with a rich and diverse offering of therapeutic experiences and, under the direction of the Therapist II, ensure that these activities are coordinated with other elements of treatment. Therapists within the PSR department design expressive therapy interventions at the Center, in both group and individual formats, to promote development of affect regulation, self-esteem, social skills, trust, distress tolerance, interpersonal skills, and other skill development that support goals and objectives identified in individual treatment plans. The Music Therapist will also conduct assessments, complete treatment plans, and support milieu activities provided by the Nursing Department.
Competencies Required to perform Job.
• Demonstrated knowledge of child/adolescent development as well as psychiatric and behavioral disorders.
• Knowledge of positive behavior management techniques.
• Ability to plan, conduct, and document active treatment interventions for patients using multi-modal techniques and to adapt activities and interventions to varying patient needs.
• Ability to evaluate & report children’s progress to other clinical team members including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and direct care staff.

Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents is the only facility providing mental health care to children and adolescents in Virginia under the Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services umbrella. The Center offers a modern, safe environment with four 12-bed living units and adequate education and recreational space on a single-story floor plan.
The Center is affiliated with the University of Virginia Department of Psychiatric Medicine. It provides a training ground for professionals from other colleges and universities in nursing, social work, psychology, and activities therapy.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree, or equivalency degree, in music therapy required.
• Completion of 1200 hour music therapy clinical internship required.
• Certification as a Music Therapist (or in progress, with the expectation that the candidate secure certification within six months of hire) required.
Additional Considerations
• Completion of clinical internship in a mental health and/or pediatric setting preferred.
• Master’s degree in music therapy, or a closely related field, preferred.
