Brief Description of Duties
The incumbent functions as a Research Officer in the Office of University Research (OUR), which is under the leadership of the Vice President for Research, within the Office of the Chief Academic Officer. The Research Officer contributes expertise in regulatory compliance as it applies to research compliance and security, grantsmanship, research development, budget administration, partnership development, and related activities to support a range of OUR functions and UDC strategic research initiatives. The Research Officer is also the advocate for training of faculty as it relates to research compliance and security and the pursuit and management of grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, and other sources of sponsored funding. The incumbent works under the administrative direction of the Vice President for Research.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Serve as UDC’s IRB Administrator:
• Function as the OUR liaison with UDC’s schools/colleges and other units in the coordination of all UDC Institutional Review Board (IRB) activities.
• Coordinate with the UDC IRB Chair and Committee and other units to ensure UDC is IRB compliant in all activities, whether research activities are unfunded, internally funded, or externally sponsored funded.
• Develop and administer a risk management paradigm for UDC for research compliance in the areas of IRB, research integrity, and research security
• Support the Research Ecosystem at UDC:
• Work closely with the Director for Graduate Studies in the Office of the Chief Academic Officer (OCAO) to coordinate training and policies/procedures for graduate students, post-doctoral positions, and other areas as it pertains to graduate research at UDC.
• Provide guidance to PIs to ensure all Departmental and Institutional approvals are obtained to enable timely proposal submission, for the processing of all Institutional Review Board (IRB) requests.
• Provide guidance to PIs to ensure proposals for funding are compliant with internal and external policies, routing/signatory guidelines, electronic submission and other requirements as it relates to research compliance.
• Audit and update OUR policies and protocols to align to federal regulations and oversight.
• Organize and Support Education and Training Initiatives from OUR:
• Stay abreast of, and communicate campus-wide, the changes in Federal regulations, processes, and forms as well as District of Columbia and other agency requirements for proposal submission, grants management compliance, and reporting.
• Assist Office of University Research’s Vice President for Research with development, coordination, and/or conduct of university-wide training sessions on a variety of sponsored programs topics to encourage faculty and staff to become proficient with proposal development, grant writing and electronic submission policies as well as post-award management, compliance, and reporting practices.
• Coordinate with UDC’s Office of Marketing and Communications for UDC Website management and oversight.
• Support External Partnerships:
• Support the Vice President for Research in addressing strategic priorities focused on the development of external collaborations and partnership agreements.
• Coordinate the effective delivery of information to on- and off-campus stakeholders and other audiences via oral, written, and electronic (technology-based) communications mechanisms, including social media platforms when relevant.
• Support the Vice President for Research and Office of University Research staff in organizing and coordinating UDC research events.
Other Duties
• Prepare and present a monthly report of research compliance activities and training's for the Vice President of Research.
• Coordinate and/or conduct faculty/PI training in pre- and post-award management and accountability as well as roles/responsibilities as PI for a sponsored award.
• Coordinate and/or conduct faculty/PI training in responsible research compliance and security.
• Assist PI in preparation for site visits from sponsoring agencies and/or auditors.
• Maintain current and accurate data for UDC bio-sketches, sponsoring agency templates, university templates, and other support resources.
• Represent the Vice President for Research at both internal and external meetings as requested.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
• Experience in conducting or working in a research environment or research policy environment, with exposure to research regulatory requirements.
