Department/Program Description: The Immigration Policy Lab (IPL) at Stanford University evaluates policies and designs evidence-driven innovations that help improve the lives of refugees, immigrants, and the communities in which they live. We seek to improve the lives of these newcomers and strengthen the communities receiving them. We work closely with community-based organizations and government agencies to design new programs and tools with the potential to affect the lives of millions of migrants. Position Summary: Stanford University is seeking to hire a full-time Data Scientist to join the Immigration Policy Lab (IPL) to work on its Migration and Development and U.S. Immigration research portfolios. In partnership with governments, the projects in these portfolios analyze administrative data to understand mobility patterns and the impact of migration governance, and study and implement development interventions to assist migrants in the Global South (such as refugee labor market integration and migrant reintegration), along with projects on immigrant health, naturalization, and integration of different immigrant groups in the U.S.

The Immigration Policy Lab (IPL) at Stanford University evaluates and designs policies surrounding the integration of immigrants and refugees worldwide. By producing new evidence and translating it into creative solutions, we seek to improve the lives of these newcomers and strengthen the communities receiving them. We engage with community-based organizations as well as local, state, national, and international governmental agencies to test the effectiveness of current policies. We also design new policies, programs, and tools that ultimately affect millions of migrants, as well as the economic and social prosperity of the countries in which they live. Our talented team of faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate and undergraduate students is creating an innovative research model that combines the quality and rigor of an academic unit with the efficiency and innovation of a civic-tech lab.

About the position

We are looking for a full-time Data Scientist to provide technical and analytical expertise to our portfolios. This position will report to the Executive Director and work closely with IPL staff and faculty across multiple projects and portfolio. The Data Scientist will help design, implement, and evaluate policies and programs to improve the integration and well-being of migrants around the world. The Data Scientist will also be responsible for creating, managing, and updating datasets and codebases assuring that the data quality, processing, and analysis meet rigorous production standards. In collaboration with other team members, the Data Scientist will contribute to research designs, conduct/interpret analyses, identify new data, and explore new and creative data collection and analytical methods.

We are looking for candidates who have the ability and experience to meet the technical requirements of the position and who are enthusiastic about using their skills to conduct analyses with real-world impacts. The Data Scientist will also have the opportunity to co-author papers that report on the results of these studies, as well as work with an array of affiliated faculty from top institutions.

IPL is a hybrid (on-campus and remote), highly-collaborative team work environment.

This is a 100% FTE, one-year, fixed-term position with the possibility of renewal depending on funding and performance. Candidates who are available to work in-person are highly preferred. Remote worker agreements may be considered for candidates in the U.S. with the appropriate background and experience.

The interview process may include a (live) data science task.
