Research Assistant, Chemical and Petroleum Engineering

Chemical and Petroleum Engineering within the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI), the research assistant in Green Catalysis Research Group (GCRG) is responsible for conducting research in heterogeneous catalysis and its application in clean energy and environmental control under the PI's guidance and by following the outlined procedures developed by the PI. This position involves searching relevant newest developments in the industry and academia, developing new catalysts, enhancing the efficiency of existing catalysts, evaluating catalytic performance and conducting sample characterizations. The research assistant will be helping PI to manage lab daily operation, collaborating on operating and maintaining technical equipment with moderate complexity, performing experiments, analyzing results, disseminating research outcomes in a scientific way. The research assistant has the freedom to determine his/her own work schedule as long as the important deadline can be met.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
• Keep abreast of relevant developments in the industry and academia.
• Develop new catalysts and enhancing the efficiency of existing catalysts in triggering clean energy conversion and environmental control.
• Perform catalytic experiments to get meaningful results.
• Critically analyze the collected results to draw convincing conclusions.
• Work close with scientists and engineers to assist their research projects.
• Conduct routine lab equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Assist in daily lab management.
• Develop high quality project progress report.
• Prepare manuscript for publication on high impact journal.

Qualifications / Requirements:
• M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or related fields.
• Knowledge of crude oil upgrading.
• Familiarity with laboratory testing equipment.
• Catalyst characterization such as BET, FTIR, TGA, GC/MS experience preferred.
• Experience in oil and gas industry.
• Plasma chemistry or related field experience as an asset.
• Excel in machine learning and its application in catalyst discovery and process optimization.
• Strong background and proven track record in technoeconomic analysis and life cycle assessment.
• Proficient with MS (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Ability of working independently and in a team with effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Organization with proven time management and detail-oriented skills.
• Ability to self-motivate and take initiative.
• Strong problem-solving skills with innovative, creative thinking.
