Scary Stories Creative Writing Enrichment Teacher for Middle School Afterschool Program in Salem, MA
Program Description: LEAP for Education operates middle school afterschool and summer programs in partnership with Salem Public Schools and Lynn Public Schools. Project-based enrichment opportunities are offered each session in a variety of subject areas to provide opportunities for students to explore new interests in engaging ways, connect school day learning to new applications, and develop social-emotional and team work skills.
Job Description: During a 10-week afterschool session, the Scary Stories Creative Writing Enrichment Teacher will lead a learning experience for a group of 16-20 students twice a week that introduces students to various scary stories, writing strategies for specific effects, and the writing process to inform students' creation of their own writing (Scary stories curriculum is already developed and will be shared).. Other ideas and subject matter focus -- such as comic books and graphic novels, and other teachers' ideas will be considered. By the end of the session, students should have developed a project or product to share with their peers and staff. You do not need to be a certified teacher to apply as long as you have some prior experience teaching writing.
Timeframe: The Fall session will run from October 7 - December 12, 2024. The Enrichment experience can run on either Mondays & Wednesdays or Tuesday & Thursdays for 1.25 hours each day during the 3:10-4:30 timeframe. Facilitators are paid an additional ½ hour each day for set up/clean up and 1 hour a week for planning time. Some paid planning time is provided prior to the start of the session to review the unit and plan for instruction.
Enrichment instructors will have support in the classroom from Group Leaders who work with students throughout the afternoon and the Site Coordinator who oversees day-to-day operations.
Compensation: $30.00 per hour ($45 an hour for certified teachers)
Job Responsibilities:
• Develop a session overview (template provided) for the 10-week session that incorporates active student participation, some student choice, and that leads to students creating a project or final product (as a whole or small group or individually).
• Facilitate an enrichment class in a 1.25 hour in-person session twice a week with 16-20 students.
• Build relationships with each student and establish a welcoming supportive classroom environment.
• Incorporate strategies and activities that develop students’ social emotional skills.
• Guide a group leader (who may be a college student or recent grad, Americorps Fellow, or school paraprofessional) in how to support students with session activities and learning
• Support and build in accommodations for English Learners and students on IEPs and Behavior Plans.
• Communicate specific student needs to the Site Coordinator
• Participate in periodic staff meetings (dates TBA)- paid time
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or GED minimum, some college preferred
• Previous experience working with youth in a school, after school, and/or summer program
• Previous experience teaching writing (preferably to youth)
• Experience working with middle school youth from diverse backgrounds, preferred, not required
• Proven ability to engage, motivate, and inspire students to learn
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Flexible and adaptive work ethic
