Job Description: SUMMARY: The Staff Scientist is the lead researcher in the lab independently designing and performing a wide range of research experiments that aim to understand transcription and effects of RNA modifications. This work involves extensive knowledge and techniques relating to RNA biology, including chemistry of modification of RNA. The position requires an individual with detailed knowledge of RNA biology, genetic/genomic techniques, chemistry and sequencing methods to study RNA biology. The individual is also involved in mentoring and supervising a number of other researchers in the lab, including postdocs, graduate students, research technicians, and undergraduate students. The Staff Scientist will contribute to scientific publications by writing and editing articles/manuscripts, preparing quality figures and analyzing data. The Staff Scientist will also oversee and coordinate the activities of multiple other personnel working on this project and liaise with other departmental members. This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one year from hire, which may be extended based upon available funding. QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience Education: Master’s degree required (Ph.D. preferred) in a field relevant to genetics, molecular biology, RNA biology 3 years of experience, extensive post-Ph.D. experience preferred Experiences in laboratory management, supervision, and training and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent technical skills Excellent inter-personal skills Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) Job Competencies Must have an understanding of the purpose for and reactions constituting the experiments being performed. Ability to independently carry out experiments and deviate from protocols when necessary Willingness to take instruction and training in specific techniques Experience with working with RNA Individual must have an understanding of general goals for experiments Must be able to accurately write and report experimental data Must be observant and self-motivated, able to think critically and problem solve. The position requires highly developed time management skills Lab needs and project requirements may change direction, and flexibility to redirect effort is often necessary. Must maintain protocols in accordance with EH&S directives Must be able to interact well and communicate with others.
