Chemistry Supervisor - PHD Clinical Chemist

Shift Type: Day, Monday through Friday, Alternating Weekends & Holidays

Position Summary

The Supervisor oversees and directs the activities of the Chemistry and Immunology laboratories to ensure high-quality testing and compliance with regulatory requirements. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
• Adhere to Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
• Ensure quality departmental and clinical services are delivered in line with hospital and regulatory/accreditation standards.
• Monitor and enforce employee compliance with hospital and Human Resources policies and procedures.
• Ensure staff meet competency and educational requirements as per hospital policy.
• Participate in the Performance Improvement Program as outlined by the organization.
• Attend Management/Leadership meetings as required, communicating hospital policies, performance improvement initiatives, and other necessary information to staff.
• Engage in committees, task forces, and projects as needed.
• Ensure a safe environment for both employees and patients.
• Stay informed about departmental operations and developments.
• Collaborate effectively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promote a team-oriented approach both within the department and across the hospital.
• Foster positive customer service, employee relations, and adherence to Customer Service Behavioral Standards.
• Support hospital initiatives and projects, acting as a positive change agent.
• Model a professional image and serve as a role model, coach, mentor, and resource for staff and peers.
• Oversee and supervise tests conducted by Chemistry Scientists.
• Train and support Scientists with specialized tests, interpret results for physicians, and provide advice on follow-up tests as needed.
• Manage the Quality Control Program and prepare monthly Quality Control reports for section meetings.
• Handle section payroll and time sheets.
• Stay updated on accrediting agencies' regulatory standards for Clinical Chemistry Laboratory compliance.
• Document test implementation and staff training.
• Supervise and review Point-of-Care Glucose testing within the Department of Laboratories.
• Maintain effective communication within and beyond the Laboratory Department.
• Establish and maintain a Quality Assurance Program for the Chemistry Section, including performance reviews, Quality Control, and test result evaluations.
• Contribute to the development and utilization of laboratory/computer software, including instrument interfacing, tests, worksheets, and report formatting.
• Troubleshoot instrument malfunctions as necessary.
• Monitor turnaround times for Chemistry, Special Chemistry, and Reference Tests.
• Perform duties of Sectional Scientist and Assistant Supervisor as required.
• Develop and submit departmental goals and objectives as directed by the Division Administrator.
• Conduct interviews, hire, evaluate, counsel, and terminate employees in accordance with hospital policy.
• Ensure completion of staff orientation, annual, and ongoing competency and educational requirements.
• Participate in educational programs to maintain expertise and manage the department effectively.
• Use various methods to communicate information effectively.
• Adhere to safety standards for both employees and patients.
• Perform additional duties as requested by the Director of Laboratories, Laboratory Administrator, or their designee.
• Complete all other related tasks as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Technology or a related science with at least six years of relevant hospital experience.
• Master’s Degree in Clinical Chemistry.
• Certification by ASCP or NCA preferred.
• Current NYS License or eligibility for licensure required.
