The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
Description
The US Retail Markets (USRM) Claims Data Science team is hiring two Directors of Data Science to each manage a new team, one will be focused on Auto Physical Damage claims and one will be focused on Property claims.

Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs), Computer Vision, and other technologies bring many previously impracticable business challenges into the realm of possibility for data scientists. Responsibilities include:
• Collaborating with claims process, experience, technology, and analytics teams to help create the most accurate, caring, and efficient claims organization in the insurance industry.
• Leading a team of three or more data scientists and analysts who train models, package them for deployment, and evaluate and monitor models’ in-market performance.
• Leading and developing your team by setting clear goals and expectations, motivating and inspiring high performance, leveraging a diversity of perspectives, and supporting the people on your team as they grow and develop.
Required skills and experiences:
• Deep knowledge of the data science lifecycle, from deciding what problems to solve, through training and deploying models, to evaluating and continually monitoring in-market performance.
• Experience collaborating with stakeholders who are not data scientists themselves, to understand which problems need solving, design solutions, and bring them to market.
Additional skills and experiences that are nice to have:
• Prior experience managing a team.
• Knowledge of P&C claims processes and technology.
• Hands-on data science technical skills in Python, ML Ops, and NLP and LLMs.
Qualifications
• Responsible for management, technical oversight and development for a team of data science and advanced analytics staff, which may include subordinate managers.
• Collaborates with business partners to develop tools and services such as modeling, dashboard development, and decision aids to drive strategic decision making.
• Presents findings, shares insights, and makes recommendations that impact profitability, growth and/or customer satisfaction.
• Responsible for highly technical, individualized and difficult to develop tools which are transformative in nature and have broad strategic impact to the aligned business unit.
• Provides strategic input on highly technically complex projects that drive change across function, SBU or Corporate Department.
• Directs work through others and may perform highly complex, technical and creative predictive analytics projects.
• Shapes the data science community and leads cross functional working groups.
