Description
The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Clinical Nurse Specialist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Operations and Business Manager.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Research Support
• Applying expertise in orthopaedics/orthopaedic trauma for effective and successful project progression and completion
• Assist in designing research projects that will attract external funding as well as lead to peer-reviewed high-impact publications
• Use high-level scientific judgment to create and/or adapt and implement best scientific practices
• Mentor students and staff on a daily basis to ensure success and progress of projects
• Recruitment of patients into clinical research projects, booking appointments, collecting patient data, taking clinical patient histories, patient education, and phlebotomy
• Reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for the analysis of various biological samples (e.g., blood, urine)
• Support and direct multiple research projects at any given time, including planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of all activities surrounding the research projects
Leadership
• Oversee the design, implementation, optimization for technical aspects of new research projects and clinical trials and quality improvement initiatives for trainees and staff
• Provide in-scope supervision to junior staff including other AUPE staff, students, and trainees
• Mentor students and staff in patient recruitment, retention of enrolled patients, and problem-solving for improved research processes
• Provide feedback to principal investigator and reports-to manager regarding staffing needs
Patient Care
• Providing professional and knowledgeable support in regards to research to patients
• Educate patients on all aspects of their participation in the research study or clinical trials
• Recruitment of patients into clinical research studies/trials, booking appointments, collecting patient data, taking clinical patient histories, reviewing medical histories, patient education, and phlebotomy
• Preparing reports for review with the PI for adverse events and serious adverse events as an asset
• Blood draws and blood sample analysis
Collaboration
• Professional interactions and liaison with other healthcare providers (e.g., surgeons, case managers, administrative assistants) for patient recruitment, scheduling, and follow-ups
• Provides support and direction to members within the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Team, including acting as a resource and ensuring work requirements are consistently met on a daily basis
Qualifications / Requirements:
• Registered Nurse is required
• MSc in health science related field an asset
• Experience with Health Canada regulated clinical trials is an asset
• A minimum of 5 years of clinical experience is required, with clinical research experience and orthopaedic or trauma-related experience
• Phlebotomy/venipuncture skills/certification is a requirement
• Extensive knowledge of musculoskeletal and/or medical terminology is required
• Must have willingness and experience to work with various biological samples (e.g. blood, tissues, urine, etc.)
• Experience with electronic medical records; Impax, Netcare, and Connect Care is required
• Knowledge of theory and practical application of research policies and procedures is required
• Experience with ethics application through CHREB/IRISS is considered an asset
• Laboratory biosafety training and certifications required for the conduct of clinical research involving human subjects is considered an asset and training will be required, as needed
• Demonstrated ability to convey complex concepts in a clear, concise, and logical manner
• Extensive experience in the direction, supervision, and guidance of students and staff
• Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Must be able to work independently with directives and minimal supervision
• Must be willing and able to travel to other clinics/hospitals in Calgary for patient recruitment and follow-ups, if needed
