Job Summary
The Department of Environmental Health is accepting applications for a Research Specialist. This position reports to the Director of the Environmental Health Sciences Laboratory (EHSL) to oversee the laboratory's general operation and daily activities. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Supervises graduate assistants, undergraduate students (APS, FWS, and RWS), and independent study students working in or using EHSL equipment and facilities.
• Conducts safety training for all laboratory personnel and oversees all aspects of safety in the laboratory.
• Serves as the QA/QC officer for state and federally-mandated quality assurance programs for environmental data.
• Conducts water quality monitoring and analyses for various projects, including community service activities like private well-water testing.
• Performs research on topics agreed upon with the laboratory director.
• Participates in writing funding proposals.
• Maintains laboratory databases.
• Oversees the ordering of supplies needed to support research and other activities conducted in the EHSL.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of standard methods for analyses of water and wastewater.
• Ability to work in a laboratory and apply all applicable rules, regulations, and safety procedures.
• Ability to perform chemical and microbiological analyses, especially with cell cultures and virus assays.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to work on various laboratory equipment.
Required Qualifications
• Master of Science or Master of Public Health degree in environmental health science; or a related discipline will be considered.
