Engineer I - Public Works Design Engineer

Under general supervision, performs entrance-level professional civil engineering work in connection with surveying, designing, construction, and maintenance of Public Works projects; and performs other work as required.Coordinates with a survey crew in making preliminary surveys for City projects; prepares plans, specifications, contract documents, and cost estimates for the design and construction of storm drains, hydraulic structures, street improvements and waste water collection facilities, and traffic signals; prepares contracts, specifications and cost estimates for design projects; prepares environmental evaluations and documentation for design projects; writes letters pertaining to the construction of City projects; carries out inspection of street maintenance work and minor construction projects; answers counter inquiries and gives out information; checks complaints from public; and performs other work as required.Applications will be accepted only from those applicants who clearly demonstrate on the application and resume that they have graduated from an accredited college with a degree in engineering; possession of a valid certificate as an Engineer-in-Training by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers may be substituted for required education. Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license is required. Desirable: Familiar with AutoCAD and Land Development Desktop; proficient with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel and familiar with City’s design standards.

Knowledge of: the modern principles and practices of civil engineering; mathematics and physics as applied to engineering; modern methods in the construction and maintenance of Public Works projects; topographic and construction surveying, stress analysis, and analytical mechanics and the strength, properties, and uses of construction materials.

Ability to: prepare accurate drawings, maps, and technical reports; use engineering and drafting equipment; understand and operate office personal computers.EXAMINATION: (Weighted 100%) The method of examination may include one or more of the following: written exam; oral exam; evaluation of education, training, experience or other qualifications as shown by the application, or by other information submitted, or by the record; questionnaires submitted to references; or any other appropriate measure of fitness. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

Note: Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination.
