City of Rancho Palos Verdes

The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is launching its Fall Internship Program! This is an academic opportunity that allows students to apply academic skills and knowledge in the workplace. Experiential education based on learning objectives helps students prepare to meet career responsibilities after graduation. The program's goal is to allow students to apply, evaluate, test, and integrate academic knowledge and theoretical concepts in a work setting. Interns will work hands-on within City departments to complete projects, reports, assessments, etc. This opportunity is designed to attract, develop, and mentor individuals interested in pursuing a career in local government. To be eligible, you must be a current college student, graduate student, or recently graduated from college or graduate school within the last 2 years.
Interns will be paid $16/hour and will be scheduled to work up to 15 hours per week.

Currently, the internship program is available in our City Administration Department and Finance.

An intern within City Administration has the opportunity to be exposed to many different facets of the Administration department such as: Human Resources, City Clerk, Public Safety/Emergency Preparedness, Government & Community Relations, and Information Technology. You will be exposed and learn about the functions of these divisions and how they help to provide services to the residents of RPV.

An intern with the Finance department will learn about accounting, payroll, budgeting and understanding the fiscal year. The intern will have exposure to reporting, assist with various administrative tasks and office support all while learning all about the exciting world of finance in the public sector.

• Perform a variety of entry-level administrative staff duties related to areas such as administrative regulations, policies, processes, procedures, systems, methods, reports, surveys, and forms, while learning the fundamental mission, structure, and operations associated with the assigned department.
• Research and compile data for specialized reports and records; ensure data accuracy; compile and prepare reports.
• Collect, summarize, and analyze information and statistics.
• May assist in updating web site contents and making suggestions on information layout.
• Plan and implement programs, special projects, assignments, and events.
• Provide general support to staff as needed.
• Answer and make phone calls, respond to department related questions and send written material as appropriate.
• Perform related duties as assigned
A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows:

Education and Experience:

Current students enrolled in a college or university or other continued educational program, including vocational or certified training programs in the field of interest.

Knowledge of:
• Modern English usage including grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
• Basic mathematics.
• Personal computers and related software applications.
• Printers, copiers, fax machines, cameras and audio-visual equipment.

Skill and Ability to:
• Compile, review and evaluate data.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Work on concurrent assignments with competing deadlines.
• Must maintain confidentiality.
License/Certificate:
