Job Description

We are currently hiring a temporary Federal Writer-Editor to support communications efforts within U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The temporary Writer-Editor would come with a deep understanding of developing content for executive leaders and writing/editing workforce messaging. The anticipated duration of temporary employment would be 12 months. Ideal candidates would possess experience working for a large law enforcement organization and possess a strong network across the Department of Homeland Security.

In this Writer-Editor position, you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals. Typical work assignments include:

Writing and editing a variety of materials for senior executives, including articles, correspondence, speeches, talking points, newsletters and other products related to the Enterprise Services mission, operations, history, objectives, interests, viewpoints, and needs of the organization

Gathering, developing, and checking the accuracy of information from a wide range of sources

Ensuring statements in speeches do not conflict with the policies and objectives of related programs or positions, are based on fully supported information, and that sources are credited when/where appropriate

Determining the most logical and effective use of information and overall length and tone, based on the requirements of the executive and the audience

Developing and implementing the agency's editorial policies, practices, guidelines, and standards, provides authoritative guidance on editorial matters to personnel, reviews written policies and writing trends, recommending additions, deletions, and/or revisions

Collaborating with strategic communications specialists/ graphic designers to established new presentation formats, to ensure materials are presented clearly, with no possibility of misunderstanding and disseminates newly established formats to program office personnel

What are the Required Qualifications?

Bachelor’s Degree

Minimum of 5 years of specialized experience performing duties such as:

writing and editing senior executive-level correspondence, presentations, speeches, and talking points

reviewing, evaluating, and developing documents for editorial quality, consistency, and compliance with established style, format and content

managing an organizational website using presentation, word processing, and publishing software

Proven track record in gaining client trust and building credibility

Experience managing components of strategic communications strategies (e.g., talking points, content development, refinement, comfortable distributing content across platforms, etc.)

Demonstrated excellence presenting to an executive-level audience, both written and oral

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future

Ability to successfully complete and retain any company, federal, or other background investigations required to perform client work

What are the Desired Qualifications?

CBP Background Investigation or other DHS Background Investigations highly preferred

Previous writer-editor experience within DHS highly desired

Compensation:

$50-$60/hour, plus some benefits
