Sciome consults with leading researchers across the globe providing analytics support for experiments that generate large volumes of scientific data from a variety of health and environmental projects. Sciome has an opportunity for a statistical geneticist who will provide data analytical support for a diverse set of studies investigating the complex relationships between genetic and environmental factors or potential therapeutics on biological systems. Our clients generate massive amounts of scientific data via varied high throughput technologies, and such projects require systematic analysis of multidimensional data using state of the art statistical and/or machine learning techniques. Additionally, we partner with our clients to develop novel biostatistical methods, mathematical models and machine learning approaches, often resulting in new methods published in peer-reviewed journals along with the release of new software packages for wider use. The candidate will have a unique chance to work with leading scientists having wide ranging perspectives on scientific issues and to progress his/her career in a growing organization.
Education
Master’s or PhD degree in Statistics / Mathematics or closely related field.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop, and implement mathematical or statistical analyses of genetic data aimed at assessing the impact of environmental or therapeutic exposure on key biological endpoints.
• Contribute towards the application of statistical approaches for the analysis of genomics, toxicology, environmental or clinical data.
• Participate in the development of novel quantitative approaches, or the customization of statistical methods per project needs.
• Identify analytical and computational bottlenecks involved in analysis and develop techniques to resolve them efficiently.
• Ensure appropriateness and applicability of mathematical, statistical, or research techniques utilized, and contribute towards rigorous evaluation and validation of those techniques.
• Assist in evaluation and documentation of statistical methodologies used and prepare recommendations based on mathematical or statistical findings.
• Participate in manuscript/report preparation to accurately summarize study design, methods, analysis plans and interpretation of results.
Desired Skillset
The ideal candidate will have experience in several of the following areas:
• In-depth knowledge of core statistical principles and various areas of statistical sciences such as generalized linear and additive models, mixed effects models and other multivariate methods, Bayesian methods, power and sample size calculation, dimensionality reduction, etc.
• Demonstrated ability to select appropriate statistical techniques given a data analysis problem.
• Familiarity with statistical methods used for genome wide association studies (GWAS), detection of variance quantitative trait loci (vQTL), genetic linkage analysis for pedigree data, haplotype construction and epistasis biomarker development.
• Experience with methods for genotype calling, copy number variation and missing data imputation.
• Experience with implementation of multi-stage workflows and automated report generation is preferred.
• Experience with the use of statistical packages in R, SAS, PLINK, GoldenHelix
• Scientific programming experience using scripting languages such as Perl and/or Python is preferred.
• Strong communication and writing skills in English are essential.
• The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of scientific publication in biostatistics, bioinformatics, life sciences or related scientific domains.
