Scion Executive Search has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a highly strategic nonprofit Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for our client, American Bird Conservancy (ABC), a highly regarded $30M nonprofit dedicated to conserving wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. POSITION OVERVIEW: Reporting to the President, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a vital member of the Executive Leadership Team and works closely with the Board. The CFO will bring extensive expertise in financial management, business strategy, nonprofit accounting, reporting, compliance, and best practices to ABC. The ideal candidate will be proactive, strategic, flexible, organized, and detail-oriented, with a strong sense of urgency for meeting deadlines. Clear, frequent, and effective communication with the management team and the Board is essential. The CFO will lead, mentor, and manage a finance team of 12 professionals. With demonstrated experience and leadership, the CFO will oversee all phases of financial management, including analysis, forecasting, reporting, auditing, compliance, and the implementation of robust financial controls for the American Bird Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) entity, and the American Bird Conservancy Action Fund, also a 501(c)(3) organization. The CFO will ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations and demonstrate expertise in best practices for nonprofit accounting. The CFO is responsible for preparing and maintaining all annual, quarterly, and monthly financial budgets, financial reporting, and reconciliations, as well as ensuring a clean balance sheet and effective stewardship of company resources. RESPONSIBILITIES OVERVIEW: Clearly and regularly communicates with the President, Board Treasurer, and senior team on issues affecting ABC’s financial well-being. Demonstrates a proven track record of providing strategic advice that advances the organization toward its mission. Acts as a thought partner and business leader, frequently updating all staff on key topics relevant to ABC’s financial health, strength, and longevity. The CFO will serve as a business partner to the President and divisional heads at ABC, assessing organizational performance against our annual budget and long-term strategy. This position will oversee the development of tools and systems to ensure critical financial and operational information is easily accessible and reported to ABC leaders, enabling actionable recommendations on strategy and operations. The CFO will collaborate with the executive leadership team, providing advice, counsel, and direction on issues, trends, and changes in ABC’s operating models and operational delivery. The CFO will also assist in establishing yearly objectives and meeting agendas and engage outside consultants as needed. Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with ABC’s strategic plan, particularly as the organization explores future opportunities for growth and stability. Demonstrate agile thinking and strategic planning to propel the organization forward when promising new opportunities arise. Oversee all financial reporting and controls, including accounting, finance, and procurement. Provide comprehensive financial reports to ABC’s management team, President, Board, and government entities. Serve as the Recording Secretary for the Finance Committee of the ABC Board, providing financial reporting and analysis to support requests from the ABC Board and Committee. Produce all Treasury Reporting, including the Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Revenue Recognition, and Funds Balance Analysis. Ensure that accounting practices are maintained in accordance with GAAP and that all federal funds comply with the latest OMB regulations.
