The salary range for this position is CAD $54.16/Hr. - CAD $77.86/Hr.
BC Patient-Centred Measurement (BCPM) under Providence Health Care is now accepting applications for a net new permanent part-time (0.5 FTE) Natural Language Data Scientist to join their team.
Reporting to the Provincial Executive Director, Office of Patient Centred Measurement (OPCM), the Natural Language Data Scientist analyzes structured and unstructured natural language data (i.e., survey comments), models complex problems, and identifies opportunities for process and product optimization by using statistical, algorithmic, mining, and visual techniques. Develops machine learning (ML) predictive analytics models with application to survey comments (text) through the innovative understanding and use of large data sets and the verification of effectiveness to improve clinical processes and patient outcomes. Leads the design and development of solutions for analyzing large volumes of natural language data with Large Language Models (LLMs) to support care quality improvement and to solve business problems.
Supports the strategic priorities of the BC Office of Patient-Centred Measurement, the BC Ministry of Health, and Providence Health Care (PHC) by understanding the clinical, financial, and operational issues to be solved and working closely with partners, clinical and technical experts, and functional teams to leverage knowledge, interpret outputs, deploy solutions, and provide actionable insights. The role also serves a key role in developing a solid and sustainable machine learning and natural language processing foundation and competency for PHC. Stays apprised of current trends and research on all aspects of advanced analytic techniques and works in collaboration with provincial and national colleagues.
Education, Training and Experience
• PhD in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Software Engineering, or other related discipline and five (5) to seven (7) years’ experience working with databases and data analysis tools.
• Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
• Experience in the health care sector an asset.
Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated thorough knowledge of the principles, processes, procedures, and methods involved in data mining, data analysis, statistical methods, and machine learning, with particular emphasis on Deep Learning (DL), Reinforcement Learning (RL), and applications in Natural Language Processing (NLP)
• Demonstrated thorough knowledge of Deep Learning architectures used in NLP, especially LLMs. Experience working with LLMs, including fine-tuning of pretrained models, quantization, and prompt engineering.
• Experience analyzing large volumes of open-text data using computational methods, especially in healthcare settings.
• Demonstrated strong coding ability in Python and knowledge in using data science frameworks and packages (e.g., Pytorch, TensorFlow, Pandas, Spacy, etc.), with proven ability developing and implementing software applications leveraging Deep Learning models for the analysis of free-text data.
• Demonstrated skills in dashboard development and data visualization tools (e.g., Jupyter, Matplotlib, Dash, ggplot) for visually presenting complex data to various parties for consideration.
• Demonstrated proficiency with version control tools such as Git and cloud repositories such as GitHub.
• Demonstrated skills in knowledge synthesis and translation activities, including working with sorting and manipulating unstructured data from different platforms.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to translate technical findings clearly and fluently to non-technical partners and to communicate to multiple audiences using data storytelling and graphics.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment and to develop recommendations using facilitation and consensus building.
• Demonstrated strong analytical, critical thinking, and evaluation skills to discern and help solve the important problems facing health care, to identify new ways to leverage our data, and to direct efforts in the right direction.
• Competitive salary: $106,026 - $152,413 CAD per year / $54.16 - $77.86 CAD per hour, depending on experience
