Soka University of America invites applications for a part-time Writing Specialists to join the University Writing Center staff. Writing Specialists’ primary function is to assist students in all phases of the writing process and to foster long-term development of critical thinking and academic writing skills. They typically meet with students one-with-one in either scheduled appointments or on a walk-in basis. Secondary job functions entail participation in services and projects that support the University Writing Center mission. Such services and projects may include but are not limited to conducting workshops, developing online and print resources, and participating in outreach projects. Writing Specialists work with the entire Writing Center staff to create an environment of writing excellence.
The Writing Center values diverse teaching and learning styles and seeks to create a welcoming environment for the entire SUA community. Tutor training and professional development are ongoing as a member of the Writing Center community.
This part-time position is for 15-25 hours per week during agreed upon hours within the following times:
• Mondays through Fridays from 9:00am to 7:00pm
• Sundays from 11:00am to 7:00pm
The ability to work afternoons and evenings is preferred. A minimum of one evening per week is required. Thursday evening coverage is desired for the fall 2024 semester.
Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, especially with regard to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, ability/disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity and have a willingness to facilitate the university’s mission to develop global citizens.
Essential duties include but are not limited to:

• Participate in services and projects that support the University Writing Center mission such as workshops, developing online and print resources for writing and teaching, and participating in outreach projects.
• Work with the entire Writing Center staff to create an environment of writing excellence.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
• Required – Master’s Degree or higher.
• Preferred – Ideal candidates will have an advanced degree in Composition, Rhetoric, or Applied Linguistics.
Experience
• Required – Some teaching or tutoring experience
• Preferred – Fluency in multiple languages is a plus. Experience working with neurodiverse students is a plus. Previous Writing Center experience is a plus.
Competencies/Skills:
• Have a demonstrated passion for the mission and values of SUA.
• Bring a cheerful demeanor to work and be an optimistic team player, committed to the writerly needs of the SUA community.
• Be excellent communicators, willing to support a range of writers and writing conventions across the disciplines.
• Have excellent organizational and academic skills as well as a scrupulous work ethic.
• Be sensitive to working with people of diverse identities, experiences, and backgrounds.
The anticipated hourly rate for this position is $25.00 - $30.00 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
