The Patent Agent provides the development and execution of global patent strategies to build the patent portfolio in support of achieving company goals. This position serves as the biotech patent expert for the company. This individual will work with the legal team, research and development teams, and outside counsel to develop, implement, and maintain the patent portfolio for the company ensuring the protection of our intellectual property. This position reports to the Chief Legal Officer.
• *This position will be based out of Dallas, TX and must be able to support up to 10% of travel on a quarterly basis.**
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Collaborates with R&D to identify & evaluate potential innovations and inventions requiring patent protection.
• Develops and implements strategy for the management of the patent portfolio.
• Prepares and files patent applications for devices and synthetic biology processes/methods.
• Provides strategic recommendations on patents and responds to any inquiries from the patent office.
• Monitors patent applications and provides support for any patent related litigation.
• Maintains knowledge of patent law and biotech industry trends.
• Delivers training to necessary parties around patent law including members of the R&D and leadership teams.
Required Skills and Abilities:
• Extensive experience drafting patent applications regarding devices and/or synthetic biology process/methods.
• Strong knowledge in synthetic biology, genetics, bioengineering, and related fields.
• Strong technical capabilities with a variety of software packages including Google Suite and Microsoft Office
• Communicate clearly so others can understand.

• Strong emotional intelligence and passion for building relationships across all levels of an organization.

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in a biological or bioengineering field is required, a Ph.D is highly preferred.
• At least 3 years of experience as a patent agent supporting the biotechnology industry or life sciences generally is required.
