This key position will be integral in providing data warehouse services to support all areas of our mission including strategy, operations, education and research, patient access, and overall optimization. This position is responsible for the maintenance and growth of our data warehouse technical stack. Its work includes consulting with developers for smooth deployments, satisfying ETL deployments with established governed practices, working with other teams in the department to provision access appropriately to the warehouse, and being a general technical resource available to automate key functions. The position plays a critical role in ensuring data is ingested and curated into our data warehouse on schedule and that developers and users are made aware of the statuses of their data flows and engaged to address issues. In addition to these duties, the position is required to perform any other tasks assigned to support the department's function.
A senior data warehouse operations administrator is responsible for administering the systems environment for the UCSF Enterprise Data Warehouse, creating databases, provisioning users, and supporting data engineers to meet UCSF's data and analytics needs:
• Provisions users in Microsoft SQL Server and develops automation processes to eliminate manual effort where possible.
• Creates new databases in SQL Server, hosted in the UCSF Secure Enterprise Cloud - Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment.
• Brings AWS systems administration experience to manage the environment (e.g. EC2, EBS, DMS, S3, Lambda)
• Creates new schemas in SQL Server with appropriate attention to data security
• Supports 20+ ETL developers to host SSIS packages on Integration Services Server
• Ensures all departmental best practices for ETL packages are maintained
• Troubleshoots ETL errors with developers
• Performs day-to-day monitoring of backups/CPU/storage growth
• Manages replication tool (DMS) to create/sync and maintain new assets. Works with developers to instantiate new DMS replication tasks for new data sources and maintains DMS tasks for existing data sources.
• Maintains the UCSF ETL Framework tool in concert with legacy orchestration methods.
• Automates and maintains handshakes between DMS replication and downstream data warehouse asset curation ETLs.
• Uses and supports all UCSF service tools, including ServiceNow, PagerDuty, portfolio task management, and technical tools SSIS, SSMS, and GitHub.
• Maintains thorough and detailed documentation around deployment practices, user provisioning, and database management.
• Creates and maintains ETL packages using Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services
• Possesses excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate system designs and patterns to varying levels of leadership.
• Participates in project planning, including scoping backlogs and determining estimates.
• Assumes on-call duties to support the operation of reporting and analytics systems.
• Mentors other data systems analysts to share data warehouse administration knowledge.
• Maintains appropriate business domain knowledge in healthcare, education, research, finance, or business administration
