About the team:

PPL’s Licensing team licenses the use of recorded music on radio and television (‘TV’) in the UK, as well as businesses who play recorded music to members of the public. PPL then distributes the income received from these licences to its members who include record companies and artists.

About the role:

This position sits within the TV area of licensing, where broadcasters (such as the BBC and ITV) obtain a licence to use recorded music in their programming in return for payment of a licence fee. The Licensing team’s role is to negotiate and agree licence terms with broadcasters, including the licence fee that is payable. For example, you will need to present and explain why you feel a proposed licence fee is appropriate for a TV broadcaster. You will be provided support from the Licensing team to understand common benchmarks used when you first join the team, and you will work closely with the Licensing Analysts to gathering the necessary information.
• Proactively identifying, monitoring, and contacting unlicensed television services that may require a PPL licence to close licensing gaps and increase revenue.
• Building strong working relationships with licensees and their representatives, and other relevant industry organisations.
• Managing several ongoing TV licence agreements and ensuring compliance with licence terms (such as payment and music reporting provisions) through coordination with other PPL departments.
• Identifying business risks and issues to keep abreast of changes in the TV market and identifying potential shifts that could impact our licensing.
• Ensuring the TV Licensing team’s administrative processes run efficiently by updating spreadsheets/databases and ensuring that the flow of information between internal departments, licensees and other external parties is relevant and timely.
• Answering calls and e-mail enquiries regarding PPL’s television licences.
• Inputting into inter-departmental initiatives, such as the implementation of new systems or technologies, and ensuring that the Licensing teams’ requirements are captured.
• Representing PPL at industry events on an ad-hoc basis, which will give you the opportunity to meet others in the music industry.
• Some travel may be required to attend the offices of other organisations, although this is primarily London based at the current time.

What you’ll need:
• At least two years’ experience in a client-facing office role
• Experience in negotiating and an ability to influence internal and external stakeholders
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
