Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking graduate students in chemistry or materials science program for a 2025 Summer Internship to work in our Laboratory, located in Northbrook, Illinois.

The WJE Janney Technical Center, located on the campus of the company headquarters in Northbrook, IL, is seeking candidates who are in between bachelor’s degree and master’s or PhD programs or current graduate students. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to apply your classroom training in the real world.
Responsibilities:
• Perform wet chemical and instrumental analyses, under the guidance of experienced materials scientists, including completing stoichiometric calculations; preparing chemical solutions of specified concentrations; weighing samples; and performing titrations
• Will gain hands on experience working with concrete, sealant, polymers, paint and other materials
• Accurately record and organize data for analysis, while exercising good judgment in assessing reasonableness of test results
• Assume responsibility for key aspects of laboratory safety, maintenance, and quality assurance, including setting up, operating, and maintaining laboratory instruments; cleaning glassware; and restocking laboratory supplies, reagents, and solutions
• Interface with project teams and disciplines across the company
Requirements:
• Qualified candidates will have completed their bachelor's or have begun completing a master’s or PhD program in Chemistry or Materials Science
• Ability to demonstrate strong laboratory skills, integrity, excellent oral and written communication skills, curiosity, and enthusiasm required
• Possess a strong interest in performing hands-on laboratory work and supporting professional staff that focuses on laboratory testing and analysis of real-world building materials required
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and laboratory equipment such as balances, glassware, chemicals, computer, printer, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office and lab equipment. Requirements also include:
• Ability to work safely in a chemistry laboratory environment
• Understanding of basic chemical principles, including stoichiometry and the appropriate way to prepare laboratory solutions
• Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 30 lbs.
• Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
• Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and laboratory hazards
• Additionally, qualified candidates will demonstrate strong laboratory skills, integrity, excellent oral and written communication skills, curiosity, and enthusiasm.
The expected hourly rates for candidates who meet the above criteria range from $26.00 an hour to $35.00 an hour based on education level and internship job location.
