Special Education Technician

Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County, Inc.

Position Summary:

Supports administrative staff, Center Supervisor and Teacher at the center in carrying out overall program goals and objectives. Shares responsibility for overall quality of educational experience for children with disabilities. Supports CAPSLO’s mission by ensuring that individuals with a disability and their families develop knowledge and skills that encourage self-sufficiency and self-determination.

Required Education and Experience:

Must possess an Associate of Arts degree
Must pass CAPSLO’s Behavioral Health and Disabilities Aide Training Exam.
Must have 6 months of experience working with a child with a disability or related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Units in Early Childhood Education/Child Development, including courses from the following core areas:
Child/human growth and development;
Child, family, and community or child and family relations; and
Programs/curriculum for children with disabilities.

License & Certifications:

Must provide certificates of completion of approved pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR training within 30 days of hire.
The employee is responsible for renewing and maintaining a valid CPR/first aid certification at all times.

Essential Functions:

Assists children with special needs in the center.
Assists in the safe supervision of children engaged in learning and play activities by

Paying close attention to the safety of the children at all times;
Maintaining firm, but gracious limit setting; and
Maintaining an awareness of special health concerns that children with disabilities may have.

Assists the Center Supervisor and Teachers in planning activities that support Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), Individualized Education Program (IEP), goals for children with a disability or for children in the referral process. Includes

Reviewing IFSP/IEP with Center Supervisor and teachers;
Providing input into lesson plan development and participating in staff meetings;
Participating in learning and small group activities; and
Working with Center Supervisor and reporting directly to Lead Teacher in supervision of all children.

Ensures children with disabilities have access and participation in the same experiences as all children in the classroom.
Provides a clean, safe environment by participating in center housekeeping. Duties include lifting and moving equipment and furniture and cleaning activities such as dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dishwashing, etc. Shares responsibility for center maintenance, including orderliness and cleanliness that ensure proper standards of safety and sanitation.
Maintains confidentiality of child and family information, including names, disabilities, and services.
Performs special exercises and follow-up activities with children as described by therapists. Activities may support occupational, physical, and/or speech therapy.
Aids children in developing self-help skills such as toileting, feeding, dressing, napping, etc.
As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, assesses and implements each child’s IFSP, IEP, and participates in case conferencing.
Implements suggested strategies from Mental Health Consultant and Behavioral Health and Disabilities Team.
Documents children’s progress or lack of progress.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Keeps Center Supervisor, Teachers, and Associate Teacher informed of problems and concerns related to individual children, families, and/or operations of the center.
Attends and participates in all staff required trainings. Attends in-service training as assigned by the Disabilities Manager. Reviews Disabilities Instructional Aide training material prior to first day with children.
May support the Bus Driver in the safe transportation of children to and from the child care center.
Provides appropriate guidance to all children. Ensures personal rights of children are maintained at all times.
As a mandated reporter, is required to report known or suspected child abuse and neglect.
Must be dedicated to the goals and philosophy of the division’s child development programs and CAPSLO.
Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices; and act in such a manner as to assure at all times maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees, clients and children.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Center Supervisor or Lead Teacher.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge

Must be willing to increase basic knowledge of child development and early childhood education, as well as techniques of working with special needs children and their families.

Skills

Must have computer skills, with knowledge of MS Office, Word, Excel, Publisher, data management software, and web-based applications.
