Position Description:
The Director of Music Ministries is responsible for all aspects of the music program and will work very closely with the Senior Pastor to enhance all worship services. The Director of Music will manage the music for Sunday morning worship services ranging from contemporary to traditional and seasonal concerts, worship services, and performances. The Director of Music will also oversee music programming for children and youth. The Director of Music Ministries will report to the Senior Pastor and is a collaborative member of the Senior Pastor’s worship staff.
This is a full-time salaried position (40+ hours per week).
from $65,000 commensurate with experience (plus medical insurance after 90 days, eligible for vested pension in two years, and PTO)
Areas of Responsibilities:
• Worship: Collaborate with the Senior Pastor in presenting high energy, spiritually moving, inspiring, worship services. Stay current on traditional and contemporary worship music and other acts of prayer and praise.
• Organ: Play and maintain TUMC’s Casavant organ (originally built in 1957, valued at $1.3 million dollars). It is a 3-manual, 48-rank pipe organ with 2,790 pipes and four divisions. The organ console was upgraded in 2000 by Casavant Frères.
• Special Events: In collaboration with the Senior pastor in preparing and presenting inspiring and worshipful music for special seasons and events, e.g., Christmas, Easter, Palm Sunday, etc., as well as weddings and funerals.
• Musical Instruments, Budget, and Communication: Prepare and manage the music ministry budget. Includes music purchase, instrument maintenance (pianos, pipe organ, etc.), and other associated expenses. Develop and coordinate music and program communications.
• Music Ministry Growth: Develop a program to continually grow and improve the music ministry.
• Chancel Choir: Direct and rehearse adult choir. Recruit and develop choir members.
• Youth and Children’s Music Programs: Build a music program for children and youth, including (but not limited to) choir and handbell (and/or chime) choir. Lead music classes for the church’s Child Development Center. Promote and encourage programming such that Youth and Children’s choirs are vibrant, vital parts of the music ministry at TUMC.
• Handbells: Lead the adult handbell choir. Recruit new members for the handbell choir.
• Develop New Music Ministry Opportunities: Assist the Senior Pastor in developing an alternative worship service (to the traditional Sunday morning service). Also, be willing to explore other music opportunities (e.g. a ukulele choir).
• Develop and maintain the music library.
• Coordinate with the Director of Audio-Visual ministries to plan for soundchecks.
• Oversee the use and performance of guest vocalists, instrumentalists, and guest choirs.
• Rehearsing with and accompanying church members who are soloists.
• Collaborate with the Director of Communications to publicize the music program.
• Ensuring professional growth and positive, productive relationship with Church staff members by:
o Attending continuing education opportunities.
o Active participation in staff meetings and other committees as requested.
o Coordinating the scheduling of special events with other staff members.
• Attend and support church functions (e.g., after church luncheons, church dinners, church fundraisers, church plays, etc.)
• Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
• A relationship with Jesus Christ.
• BA degree in music with concentration in organ, piano and voice. Graduate degree preferred.
• Training in choral conducting.
• Experience in a religious setting. Knowledge, appreciation, and agreement with United Methodist tradition and theology is preferred.
• Knowledge, appreciation, and experience in presenting a wide range of musical traditions.
• Knowledge of handbells and other related instruments.
• Sound organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability and willingness to work with all age groups.
• Ability to work with and create opportunities for worship/fellowship within the choirs and within the congregation.
• Must be available for weekend and evening events.
