The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is searching for a full professor to serve as department chair. The ideal candidate will participate in teaching, research, and service but also have leadership experience managing academic units and/or programs. In collaboration with the faculty, the Chair will establish the overall vision for the department regarding teaching, research, and the general development of students, faculty, and staff. The Chair serves as mentor to faculty colleagues as well as shapes the department by managing and evaluating faculty and staff.
Candidates must have a PhD in Biological Sciences or a closely related discipline and an established record of effective teaching, research, and professional accomplishments consistent with the rank of full professor with tenure. The successful candidate will be expected to: 1.) teach core and elective courses in biological and biomedical sciences to undergraduate and graduate students; 2.) maintain an extramurally funded research program in their area of specialization that will provide training opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students; 3.) provide mentorship to faculty and students; 4.) serve as an advocate and leader for the department in college and university committees as appropriate.
The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences is one of the largest science departments in the College of Health and Sciences with over 350 undergraduate students and 30 M.S. graduate students. The department is also integral in the training of doctoral students in the Integrated Biosciences Ph.D. program. It is committed to providing intensive instruction and training in the life sciences by offering relevant courses and research experiences to prepare students for entry into a variety of careers in academia, secondary education, government, industry, and health related professions. The ideal candidate will be able to lead a diverse group of faculty to engage in extramurally funded research projects. The focal areas of research in the department include cancer biology, microbiology and virology, neuroscience, and science education.
