Medical Intern-Livestock

Kansas State University

About This Role:

The Veterinary Health Center is offering a one-year internship in Food Animal (Livestock Services) internal medicine and surgery. The internship will provide clinical experience working with all livestock species (bovine, ovine, caprine, porcine and camelids) in, ambulatory (field service), hospital (referral) and emergency (afterhours) clinical practice. The objective of this internship is to advance clinical skills and diagnostic capabilities of interns through direct interaction with veterinarians specializing in internal medicine, field service, and production medicine.

Clinical time is divided between ambulatory and in-hospital practice. After hours emergency duty is split equally between all current Livestock Services house officers under the direct supervision of the Livestock Services faculty. During ambulatory rotations, the intern will participate in routine herd health visits, treat individual sick animals and work at the local sale barn with the other field service veterinarians. Hospital rotations will be spent performing routine herd health procedures (including common livestock surgeries, lameness evaluations, and routine processing activities) and referral level care of sick livestock species. The intern will be expected to interact with a wide range of livestock producers most of whom are beef oriented and to develop and display excellent written and oral communication skills. The case load at the Veterinary Health Center is 80% cattle with approximately 95% beef and 5% dairy. However, the intern will treat all livestock species including bovine, ovine, caprine, porcine and camelid patients. The intern will also learn through consultation with radiologists, clinical and anatomic pathologists and other clinical and basic science specialists. The intern will receive additional instruction through participation in weekly journal club and morbidity and mortality rounds with all large animal house officers and faculty. The intern will be assigned a mentor to set personal goals and expectations for the internship. The intern will join an energetic team of livestock veterinary specialists dedicated to the success of their house officers. Upon successful completion of the internship, interns will possess a unique skill set suited for private practice or advanced training in a residency program.

Interns will be evaluated in writing three times a year and the evaluation will be discussed with the intern’s Faculty mentor. The intern must be present for orientation on the first day of the program.
