**Job Description**
• *Position**: Substitute Teacher, Newcomer Youth Summer Academy
• *Reports to**: Dean of Instruction
• *Position Term**: July 6 – August 19, 2022
• *Hours**: Training: July 6th, 7th, 8th: 9:00AM –5:00PM; Foundational online training modules to be completed independently ahead of synchronous staff training dates
Main Program: July 11th - August 19th, 2022: Monday-Thursday, 12:00-4:00PM
• *Background/IRC Summary**: Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of immigrant youth and their communities in New York City. The Education and Learning Program provides year-round programming working directly with immigrant youth, their parents and families, and their schools.
• *Job Overview/Summary:** The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived immigrant youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, social-emotional learning, physical education, digital literacy, and life skills classes. Field trips are held on Fridays.

The Substitute Teacher plays an important role in the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy. The Substitute Teacher may be called upon to work with any class level throughout the program (K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-10th, or 11th-12th grades) providing support and continuity for their class throughout the day, in the event of the absence of a NYSA Academic Lead Teacher or Classroom Culture Lead Teacher. Depending on the absence s/he is filling, the Substitute Teacher will deliver NYSA curricula and lesson plans which have been written by the NYSA Academic Lead Teachers while providing additional sheltered instruction support for English Language Learners (ELLs) or, in the event of substituting for an absent Classroom Culture Lead Teacher, focus on supporting classroom and behavior management in-class and during transitions in alignment with program guidelines. The Substitute Teacher is responsible for submitting a summary report each day of assignment to the Dean of Instruction. This is an UNPAID volunteer or internship opportunity.
• *Major Responsibilities:**

\- Participate in the Teachers Meet & Greet (tentatively scheduled for June 17, 2021) and all pre-program All Staff trainings
\- Be available to substitute teach on short notice throughout the entirety of the Academy
\- With input from IRC Staff and the Academic Lead Teacher, support the implementation of a 6 week curriculum through classroom instruction
\- Provide classroom and behavior management during substitute assignments
\- Assist in guidance of volunteer Peer Mentors and support youth participants in the classroom
\- Follow all established classroom protocols with as much fidelity as possible while on assignment
\- Supervise students in cafeteria during substitute assignments, as requested
\- Complete all required reporting communication on time. Comply with all IRC policies and protocols
• *Qualifications**
• *Job Requirements**:

\- Bachelors in education or related field required; Candidate for Master’s degree preferred
\- 2 years of experience working with children or youth, specifically in the context of a classroom, educational, and/or social-emotional program, is highly desirable
\- Experience teaching English Language Learners is required
\- Experience working in New York City public schools is highly desirable
\- Strong classroom management skills and prior professional exposure to teaching and social emotional learning highly desirable
\- Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations desirable
\- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
\- Highly organized, dependable, responsive, and collaborative work style
\- Second language proficiency language proficiency in relevant language desirable (including Spanish, French, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Arabic, Mandingo, Bambara, Wolof, Fulani, Tibetan, Russian, Urdu, Bengali, Haitian Creole, Burmese and Nepali)
\- Strong cultural competency
• *Working Environment:** The Academy takes place in a centrally located New York City public school. All participants must be willing to relocate to New York City for the entirety of the Program.
