PlayCV is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to bring fun and enriching after-school classes, programs, camps and activities to TK - 8th grade students in our community. We strive to bring enrichment programs that both further and introduce subject matters of interest. Our intention is to foster team and individual growth while developing social interactions. All of our programs take place onsite at any one of the Castro Valley Unified School District’s elementary or middle schools.

PlayCV is proud to offer an extensive Theater Arts program for any interested student. Each school year, PlayCV creates a Musical Theater Performance class. PlayCV is committed to providing high-quality, engaging theater education to elementary and middle school students. Our goal is to inspire creativity, build confidence, and foster a love for the performing arts.

Position Summary:

PlayCV is seeking a passionate and experienced Musical Director to join our team during the 2024/25 school year. The role involves teaching, or co-teaching, our Musical Theater Performance class.

8-10 hours per week, Monday - Thursday late afternoons. Timeline Commitment: October - January.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:
• Planning & Preparation: Attending an introductory planning meeting with the producers prior to the start of the program. Prepare, or assist with preparing, and organizing all necessary materials for the classes.
• Instruction: Direct a 30 min-1 hour hour long MTI KIDS or Jr. production. Must be able to blend MTI provided resources, PlayCV provided resources and your own special creative vision (while staying within MTI contract requirements).Teach acting technique, create choreography and blocking, support music learning and implement creative use of props and background sets.
• Student Supervision: Oversee and direct students. Maintain a positive and productive learning environment, and ensure students' safety and well-being during classes. Accompany and support students backstage during tech rehearsal and performances.
• Show Production: Assist in the creative planning and execution of the final production.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Minimum of 6 months experience working with school aged students in an instructional setting is required.
• This is an entry level role designed to support introduction to theater arts production and career growth.
• Previous experience in directing performance, acting or stage management with a basic understanding of musical theater and the production process is required.
• High School diploma or GED; a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, or a similar field, is a plus. Commensurate experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified will be considered.
• Ability to manage school aged students with appropriate guidance and patience, including understanding of techniques to maintain composure in a high-energy environment.
• Strong organizational skills including the ability to multitask and solve problems quickly in a decisive, creative and proactive manner.
• Having a background in dance or choir is a plus.
• Bilingual candidates are a plus.
• Must be available for all class and final show dates.

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary

Pay: $23.00 - $26.00 per hour

Expected hours: 8 – 10 per week
