The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Boston University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate starting September 1, 2024. This is a 2-year appointment, which is non-renewable, and is a 12-month full-time position. BU offers a competitive benefits package.
We seek a dynamic individual to be a main contributor to our introductory statistics Large Course Transformation (LCT) project. The primary goal of this multi-year project is a major revision of our more advanced two-semester introductory statistics course sequence, which serves about 500 students each year at Boston University. Key objectives of the transformation include switching to the R programming language, improving classroom community and student engagement, better preparing students for real-world data applications and enhancing training in modern statistical methods.
The ideal candidate has a background in statistics, biostatistics, or a related field with an interest/background in curriculum design and development. We seek a strong team player who can work collaboratively with the two faculty leading the redesign, a statistics graduate student, as well as a steering committee of other Statistics faculty, with support from the Shipley Center for Digital Learning & Innovation and the Center for Teaching & Learning at Boston University. The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for developing new course materials, including learning modules, course slides, and R-based lab activities; and, in the second year of the appointment, serve as the lab instructor for the redesigned courses. The candidate will also participate in assessing milestones and quantifying efficacy of the course transformation, with the opportunity to contribute to research publications related to the statistics LCT as well as the broader LCT initiative.
Boston University offers competitive salaries, and postdoctoral associates are eligible to receive the same employment benefits as faculty and staff. A full list of the benefits programs offered is available on the BU HR website. Postdoctoral associates in Mathematics and Statistics have office space in the new Center for Computing & Data Sciences, Boston’s largest green building (at 19 stories) and winner of the 2023 World Architecture Competition’s Education Category for its interior design.
Successful candidates should have:
• A PhD in statistics, education, or a similar field, completed before the appointment begins
• Experience with curriculum development, especially in statistics
• Expertise in the R programming language
Application Materials Required:
• Cover Letter
• Curriculum Vitae
• Teaching Statement, highlighting your approach to curriculum design for an inclusive classroom
• Also, be prepared to arrange for three letters of reference to be sent if requested
