Position Summary:
The Chief Research Officer (CRO) plays an instrumental role in the vision, strategic development, innovation, and
implementation of community-based primary care research to address the clinical priorities of safety net health
service providers and promote health equity for patients served by the AllianceChicago network. CRO facilitates
collaboration and optimization of expertise and resources across Research, Care Transformation, Data and
Analytics, Clinical Informatics, and Health Information Technology service lines to ensure: participatory and
responsive development and implementation of health services research, the representation of underserved
populations in research, design and deployment of health interventions and technologies is responsive to the
needs of the safety net, and representation of research within broader organizational strategic goals. The CRO is
expected to have established experience as Principal Investigator, securing funding for and successful conduct of
research projects.
Essential Duties:
• Develops and implements strategies for growth and expansion of the Research portfolio at
AllianceChicago. This includes diversifying research partners, increasing funding opportunities, identifying
community health priorities, optimizing stakeholder engagement, enhancing research dissemination, and
ensuring adequate infrastructure.
• Develops, manages, and maintains relationships with key health center investigators and other research
and clinical staff.
• Facilitates and builds collaborative relationships with network clinical partners and external investigators
and stakeholders in designing, implementing, and evaluating research projects in the substantive field of
knowledge on which the research is based.
• Pursues research funding opportunities to ensure financial sustainability.
• Maintains productive relationships with key research institutions and funders.
• Manages a team of scientists, clinical investigators, research assistants, recruitment and retention
specialists, research program managers, and operations lead; provides methodological and operational
guidance, mentorship, and coaching.
• Ensures the quality and regulatory compliance of AllianceChicago research activities.
• Represents AllianceChicago at local, regional, and national meetings.
• Serves as a principal investigator on studies as appropriate.
• Serves as a member of the AllianceChicago Executive Leadership Team.
• Serves as member of AllianceChicago Leadership Support Team.
Education/Training/Expertise
• A doctoral level research and/or health-related degree and postdoctoral training or equivalent experience.
• Working knowledge of relevant medicine, public health, evaluation, and health services issues.
• Eligible for or possesses and academic appointment.
• Familiarity with health care delivery in community health settings.
• Familiarity with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures; research funding institutions;
and major journals.
• Familiarity with electronic health record systems is preferred.
• Experience or demonstrated interest in working with or researching vulnerable populations.
• Proficiency in conceptualizing and developing innovative and fundable research projects, including
quantitative and qualitative methods.
• Strong analytical skills, including expertise in the modeling and analysis of data.
• Authorship in peer-reviewed publications on topics and issues relevant to this position.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Working knowledge of standard desktop computing software packages (word processing, spread
sheeting, presentation software, Internet browsers, etc.).
Experience/Requirements/Years:
• 7 to 10 years of health-related research experience, including community health services and patient-
centered outcomes research.
Working Conditions:
• General office and remote settings, extensive telephone and desk work at computer terminal
• May be required to lift, carry, bend, reach and stand with parcels up to 25 lbs.
• Will work in a close multidisciplinary team environment
• Will interface with clients in various settings and may be exposed during on-site visits to clinical
environments where medical equipment, chemicals and where communicable diseases and certain
pathogens are present.
