Prospect Research Officer
Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing free travel for Canadians in financial need who must access medical care far from home. Hope Air has provided more than 200,000 travel arrangements in our 38-year history including 24,000 travel arrangements in 2023.
That number is a record for the charity, and it reflects our trajectory. We’re seeking passionate fundraisers ready to take on the challenge of helping the charity scale to reach growing demand, and we’re seeking a detail-oriented, passionate prospect researcher to support this growth.
About the Prospect Research Officer position:
The Prospect Research Officer role provides support across the development team with a focus on finding new opportunity within our existing donor base and researching aligned supporters to feed our development pipeline.
From time-to-time, this role supports other moves management processes including prospect qualification and stewardship through reporting.
Hope Air raises revenue from aligned corporate, foundation and individual donors in different affinity groups. This role, which reports to the Chief Development Officer, will be responsible for collaborating with portfolio leads on identifying these affinity groups, researching donors within them, and providing well-researched profiles that support fundraising appeals.
Required Skills and Competencies
• A passion for helping others and making positive change in Canada. Hungry to achieve social impact and prospect identification/revenue generation goals.
• Critical thinking with a data analysis orientation.
• Strong written communication skills and the ability to produce clear and actionable reports.
• A strong understanding of fundraising fundamentals, including donor pipelines and moves management with an ability to assess affinity and capacity toward our cause for individuals, foundations and corporations.
• Experience working with a donor database and pipeline process. Familiarity with using Salesforce is an asset.
• Comfort with cold calling and other forms of lead investigation and generation to assess affinity, find contact information and otherwise support connections to Hope Air.
• Excellent organization and time management skills to support success in managing competing priorities and working efficiently to meet deadlines.
• Working knowledge of research and fundraising ethics.
Key Duties of the Role:
• Research and strategic intelligence:
• Prepare and provide prospect research material to inform fundraising approaches.
• Leverage formal and informal data mining tools (i.e. monitor news, leverage iWave, competitor analysis, etc.) to develop a full picture of prospect capacity, affinity and background details and communicate these in clear and detailed prospect profiles.
• Synthesize existing information on affinity factors and determine potential sources of prospects based on these
• Prospect identification and pipeline development:
• Conceptualize, develop and implement proactive prospecting methodologies to identify donors
• Conduct regular portfolio reviews with fundraising team
• Develop and create capacity ratings consistent with industry standards
• Investigate new fundraising opportunities through various channels (such as donor advised funds, industry partnerships etc.) to help build a robust donor pipeline
• Develop and recommend solicitation strategies based on results of research
• Other duties:
• Provide support to the moves management process as required, including early stage qualification efforts and support to stewardship/reporting Contribute to the best-practice use of our donor database within Salesforce, providing insight on organizing donor information and accurately tracking their position within the donor pipeline.
You Must Have:
• 1-3 years or more fundraising experience, with a focus on prospect research, qualification and development
• An efficient, high-energy approach to building a portfolio including a drive to unearth and develop new prospects
• Bachelor’s degree, fundraising certificate or relevant education and experience.
This position is remote and can be based anywhere in Canada.
