Job Summary A position with the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia is open for a Research Assistant within the MS MRI Research Group. The Research Assistant will work closely with faculty and staff and will mainly be responsible for assisting research coordinator in collecting and managing clinical and cognitive data, and assisting manager with setup and documentation creation for a cells therapy study. As well, they will be involved with analysis pipelines, data reconciliation between databases and completing documentation for other research studies. Organizational Status This position works within UBC MS MRI Research Group under the direct supervision of MS MRI Manager and Director(s) and manager in translational medicine. Collaborates with researchers, coordinators, radiologists, programmers, technicians, and other staff to ensure that study-related tasks are completed. Work Performed Work independently on analysis and interpretation of experiments Responsible for innovative ideas and directions on a variety of MSMRI projects and playing a significant role in setting up a project in translational medicine (GAMBIT - Global Assessment of MS with Blood and Imaging Tests) Executes the research/ lab work with minimal supervision Collecting participant clinical and cognitive assessments ensuring that their confidentiality and privacy is maintained Scoring cognitive tests and maintaining clinical databases for a variety MSMRI projects Assisting research coordinator with data reconciliation between databases at study endpoints for a multi-centre research study (AMBRA - Assessment of Microstructural Brain Alteration) including managing the clinical database (REDCap) Responsible for setup and documentation of research study Facilitates with researchers and staff scientists as required Contributes and writes abstracts and papers for peer review Responsible for documentation of SOPs and ensures that documents are maintained for various research studies Attend research meetings to keep abreast of the projects in which other lab members are involved, as well as updates the team on the status of the incumbent’s own work, including weekly team meetings, and seminar series (MRI physics, MS Connect, DMCBH neuroscience rounds, etc.). Develops and/or performs data analysis on MRI data with guidance from the Research Manager and PI. Using tools and procedures include operating the ultra-low field MRI scanner, developing and data analysis pipelines using matlab, python, and MRI analysis packages such as FSL, freesurfer, spinal cord toolbox etc. Supervise and trains junior team members on use of data analysis tools, conducting and scoring cognitive testing, interpretation of data and results. Leads design of analysis approach, data analysis, interpretation of data, and reporting (writing abstracts and manuscripts) for analysis of radiologically isolated syndrome cohort of CanProCo, and autoimmune encephalitis cohort of LOBSTR (Longitudinal Observation or Brain and Spinal cord T2 Relaxation). Performs other related duties as required. Consequence of Error/Judgement Errors in judgement could seriously jeopardize the data acquisition associated with the research projects, which could lead to data being unusable and major setback of research and operational activities Supervision Received Supervision will be provided by the MS MRI Manager, and training will be provided by manager and research coordinator. Reports directly to the MS MRI Manager. Director(s), PI and/or his/her designate will provide broad directives Supervision Given May advise/educate research staff and students on study-related responsibilities.
