Job Summary: The Biological Sciences Researcher II oversees biological sciences research projects and assumes responsibility for the day-to-day activity supporting project. Makes significant contributions to the planning and design of research and creative projects. Assists in short- and long-term planning and project goals. May assist with research and creative proposals and dissemination of project findings.
Additional Department Summary: The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alabama is seeking to hire a part-time lead research position in the lab of the incoming department chair, Robert Visalli, PhD. Advances and guides the chair's research team in herpes virus drug discovery.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of biological sciences or closely related research experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of biological sciences or closely related research experience; OR doctoral degree and some biological sciences or closely related research experience. Post-Baccalaureate degree is highly preferred (Master’s degree or higher).
Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Biology, Microbiology, or related field and three (3) years of related experience; OR master's degree in Biology, Microbiology, or related field and five (5) years of related experience.
Extensive background in molecular virology with expertise in: virus, bacterial, mammalian, insect and yeast culture systems; mammalian, yeast and bacterial protein-protein interaction systems; protein purification, PCR and RT-PCR; amino acid and DNA sequence analysis; isolation of RNA, DNA and protein extracts for analysis via northern, southern and western blotting; viral genome “recombineering”; and antiviral and viral replication assays.
