The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws. The NCWRC employs 700 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.
The NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Office of Conservation Policy and Analysis is responsible for informing, recommending, and developing statewide public policy and regulations for the agency. This office engages agency constituents and the public and seeks to understand their perspectives on the State's natural resources, wildlife management, and agency function. They then use this qualitative and quantitative data to examine current and future agency programs, policies, and regulations, to improve the chances of successful outcomes. The office is comprised of five main components: Policy Development, Program Analysis and Evaluation (Agency Relevancy), Rulemaking, Diversity & Inclusion, and Social Science.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for the Lead Social Scientist (Social Research Specialist III) for the Office of Conservation Policy and Analysis. The Lead Social Scientist is responsible for planning and conducting sociological and economic impact studies to evaluate, analyze, and interpret:
• Attitudes, opinions, and values toward wildlife resource management and conservation;
• Attitudes, opinions, and values toward the agency’s current and proposed policies, conservation strategies, and programs; and
• Economic impacts and benefits of wildlife resource management, conservation activities, regulations and programs.
The results of social science and economic impact studies will increase the Commission’s capacity to develop and/or adjust management strategies and public policies for the benefit of both wildlife resources and the public, plan strategies to communicate benefits of wildlife conservation and plan strategies to market Commission activities. Through planning and conducting social science studies and through coordination with agency staff, the employee will develop and maintain partnerships with constituent groups, universities and the public.
A Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week. This position is based in the WRC Headquarters in Raleigh, NC (Wake Co.).
