Overview
Communications creates and provides strategic communications to the Laboratory’s internal and external stakeholders and collaborators. It sets and implements a cohesive strategy to amplify the visibility of PNNL's research and develops standards and efforts that communicate PNNL’s value proposition. In doing so, Communications enhances the Laboratory’s institutional reputation and science and technology agenda. Further, Communications drives employee-focused communications; leads media and outreach to external stakeholders; supports research through robust technical editing, formatting, and graphics support; and protects the Laboratory's reputation through issues management and transparency with news media.
Responsibilities
Help craft and execute a comprehensive communications strategy that elevates the visibility of PNNL’s Earth and biological sciences work with sponsors, collaborators, peers, and prospective employees!
We’re seeking a senior-level communicator who can collaborate with and set communications strategy for other communicators in support of our Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD); serve as the primary communications point-of-contact and executive communications support to the EBSD Leadership Team, including EBSD’s Associate Laboratory Director, Program Development Office Director, and Chief Science and Technology Officer; and represent EBSD when coordinating across the Communications Division to meet key strategic requests from the PNNL Leadership Team.
In this role, you’ll leverage your talents in weaving efforts together for greater impact, and your strengths in communications strategy, planning, and project management. You will propose an annual communications strategy, craft the annual communications budget, and guide the efforts of other EBSD-aligned communicators as they support the overarching vision with localized communications efforts throughout the year. You will also lead or contribute to EBSD-wide campaigns and events and serve as the EBSD communications point-person for larger events that span multiple PNNL directorates.
The Ideal Candidate
You are a listener, convener, creator, and one who can make sense of numerous—sometimes divergent—ideas, priorities, and requests, weaving them into a comprehensive strategic plan that drives business outcomes. You have a passion for science and technology and enthusiasm for PNNL’s work in atmospheric and climate sciences, biological sciences, and environmental molecular sciences. You understand the difference between reacting and responding and highly value a strategic communication approach. You’re excited to work with researchers, team with them, and activate them as expert advisors and communications ambassadors. With a constant eye on a top-level vision/strategy, you are confident and comfortable guiding others, from senior S&T leaders to junior communications staff.
Job Complexity
Collaborating with your teammates, you will set communications direction to uplift and reinforce EBSD’s strategy—externally and internally—in priority areas. You will develop, coordinate, and implement innovative ideas to enhance business results for EBSD with its key stakeholders. You will anticipate trends, opportunities, and stories.
Interaction
You will have significant exposure to the EBSD Leadership Team, EBSD researchers and staff, the Communications Division, and some external contacts. You will build consensus, function as a project leader, and convey strategy and direction to others. You will demonstrate sound judgement on what issues need to be elevated to EBSD or Communications leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
• Build and maintain outstanding relationships with the EBSD Leadership Team, including the Associate Laboratory Director, Program Development Office Director, Chief Science and Technology Officer, and Division Directors.
• With EBSD leadership and your teammates, define internal and external communications priorities and approaches that drive business outcomes and elevate EBSD's reputation with stakeholders. Work in partnership with communication professionals and leadership to build and execute all related campaigns.
• Produce a comprehensive, annual strategic communications plan that prioritizes the most high-impact efforts and ties together EBSD communications efforts at all levels of the organization.
• Create and maintain EBSD's communications calendar and budget.
• Manage internal communications, including development and distribution of a monthly newsletter.
• Respond to-and often personally handle-requests for high-level communications support from the EBSD Leadership Team, including presentations, talking points, reports, all-staff messages, etc.
• Prioritize for amplification the most important, newsworthy, and impressive facets of EBSD's capabilities, people, and work; collaborate with the EBSD communications team and the PNNL newsroom to maintain a pipeline of EBSD stories in priority areas.
